Around 500 jobs will be created thanks to a $10 million extension to the State Government’s popular skills and training program, Skilling Queenslanders for Work.

Minister for Training and Skills Development Shannon Fentiman said the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need to provide extra support to displaced workers and groups in the community to help them get back up on their feet.

“Skilling Queenslanders for Work has a great track record for providing job ready skills and training to Queenslanders who need it most,” Ms Fentiman said.

“More than 30,000 people have found jobs thanks to participating in a Skilling Queenslanders for Work project since 2016 and the government is looking to increase the number of participants across the State.

“Investing in programs like these will open doors to more opportunities for Queenslanders while helping to drive our economy.

“This initiative is part of the Unite and Recover for Queensland Jobs plan and will deliver real support to get people back in the workforce.

“The extra $10 million boost to Skilling Queenslanders for Work will increase Work Skills Traineeships in the popular Construction, Conservation and Land Management projects.

“These projects which will benefit cohorts, such as our First Nations, youth, people with disability and long-term unemployed, will be announced in late July and will begin recruitment at the end of August.”

The Minister said the projects would include refurbishment of community facilities and recreational spaces, minor infrastructure works and land care projects across Queensland.

“They focus on providing basic skills and accredited training in construction, conservation and land management, while also benefitting community projects of local significance,” Ms Fentiman said.

“Work Skills Traineeships are focused on providing paid employment, while gaining hands-on skills that will lead to ongoing employment.

“Participants are equipped with the requisite skills and confidence to take that first step towards a career.”
